Edem Fruits

Edem Fruits is a family-run organic fruit farm and packing operation in northwestern Crete, operated by Apostolos Mylonakis. The farm is rooted in an agricultural tradition dating back to 1951 and is located in a naturally humid microclimate at the foothills of the White Mountains, which allows fruit cultivation with minimal to no irrigation. Edem Fruits produces high-quality citrus and subtropical fruits, combining historic orchards with modern organic management. Since 2022, the operation has been certified according to the Biocyclic Vegan Standard, reflecting Apostolos Mylonakis’ commitment to plant-based organic agriculture, resource-efficient processing and environmentally responsible production.

History & Commitment

The roots of Edem Fruits date back to 1951, when the Mylonakis family began cultivating fruit in the fertile region of Chania. Over the decades, the family developed extensive expertise in citrus farming, deeply connected to Crete’s climate, soils and agricultural traditions.

Under the leadership of Apostolos Mylonakis, the business has evolved into a modern organic operation that combines traditional orchards with innovative cultivation and processing methods. A decisive milestone was reached in 2022, when Edem Fruits obtained certification according to the Biocyclic Vegan Standard, affirming its commitment to plant-based organic farming systems and nutrient cycles without animal-derived inputs.

Farming Philosophy & Practices

Edem Fruits operates at the intersection of tradition and ecological innovation. The farm combines historic citrus groves — some more than 150 years old — with modern high-density plantings, all managed without chemical inputs and with a focus on environmental protection. Cultivation is harmonised with the local ecosystem, and the farm’s naturally humid microclimate allows a near-zero irrigation regime even for water-demanding crops such as avocados, helping to protect local water resources.

In its processing and packing facilities, Edem Fruits applies advanced technologies to minimise resource use and environmental impact. The packing plant uses a water-free cleaning and sorting process, significantly reducing water consumption, and packaging is designed to be fully recyclable. Photovoltaic installations and energy-efficient systems support a low energy footprint.

Production & Products

Edem Fruits cultivates and markets a wide range of fresh organic fruits including:

  • Avocados — benefiting from the humid climate and natural rainfall

  • Oranges, grapefruits, mandarins, lemons and other citrus fruits — grown under certified organic conditions

  • Kiwis, pomegranates and additional fruit varieties offered seasonally

All products are grown, harvested, packed and distributed with a focus on taste, nutrition, sustainability and traceability — from orchard to consumer.

Community & Outreach

Edem Fruits maintains an open commitment to transparency and quality. Through visits, tours and direct communication with customers and partners, the operation highlights local agricultural heritage while demonstrating how modern organic and plant-based standards can enhance fruit quality and environmental stewardship on Crete.
