Biocyclic Vegan Cashew Cultivation and Compost Innovation in Northeastern Brazil

In the municipality of Barreira, about 75 km from Fortaleza, the PA-Rural Cooperative unites around 2,000 smallholder families who have cultivated and processed cashews for generations. Founded in 1989, the cooperative is now pioneering the first biocyclic vegan cashew cultivation project in Brazil, setting new standards for sustainable and ethical agriculture in the region.

A Model for Regenerative, Stock-Free Farming

In collaboration with Biocyclic Vegan International, the terra plena project, and the Sociedade Biocíclica Vegana do Brasil, PA-Rural is transitioning its own 2.8-hectare cashew plantation and ten associated producers to biocyclic vegan certification.
A key element of this initiative is the construction of Brazil’s first phytoponic composting facility, producing Phytoponic Compost Substrate (PCS) and Biocyclic Humus Soil from local plant residues. These materials are used both to fertilize cashew orchards and to support regional vegetable production, enriching the soil while promoting biodiversity and carbon sequestration.

From Cashew Nut to Cashew Fruit – Zero Waste Processing

The project also includes the modernization of the local cashew processing factory, enabling the full use of the cashew fruit. In addition to premium cashew nuts, the plant now produces Cajuína (a traditional clarified juice) and fiber-based vegan food ingredients. By utilizing cashew apples that were previously discarded—up to 80% of the harvest—the cooperative reduces food waste, creates new income opportunities, and contributes to local food sovereignty.

Through its partnership with PlanetVegFoods in Germany, PA-Rural connects Brazilian producers directly with European consumers, ensuring a transparent and fair supply chain for biocyclic vegan-certified cashew products.

Empowering Rural Communities

The project supports training and education in soil regeneration, plant-based composting, and organic cultivation techniques. By creating year-round employment, especially for young people, it helps counteract rural depopulation and builds resilience in one of Brazil’s most climate-challenged regions.
